Hoya carnosa ‘Krimson Queen’ Care Guide

A Timeless Variegated Hoya with Elegant Cream and Pink Foliage

Hoya carnosa ‘Krimson Queen’ is one of the most beloved and recognizable variegated Hoyas in cultivation. Its glossy, succulent leaves feature creamy white to soft yellow margins surrounding rich green centers, and new growth often emerges in stunning shades of pink before maturing. Easy to grow, long-lived, and incredibly rewarding, this classic Hoya is an excellent choice for both beginners and seasoned collectors.

The parent species, Hoya carnosa, is native to eastern Asia and Australia, where it grows as an epiphyte in warm, humid forests. Rather than growing in soil, it clings to tree trunks and branches, using its aerial roots to anchor itself while absorbing moisture and nutrients from rain, organic debris, and the surrounding air.

Because of its epiphytic lifestyle, Hoya carnosa ‘Krimson Queen’ thrives when provided with bright filtered light, excellent drainage, warm temperatures, and good air circulation. Given the right conditions, it can live for decades and become even more beautiful with age.

Light

Provide bright, indirect light throughout the day.

A few hours of gentle morning or late afternoon sun help maintain vibrant variegation and encourage flowering. The pink tones in new growth are often more pronounced in brighter conditions. Avoid prolonged, harsh midday sunlight, which can scorch the pale leaf margins.

Watering

Allow the potting mix to dry about halfway between waterings.

Water thoroughly until excess water drains from the bottom of the pot, then allow the soil to dry slightly before watering again. The thick, waxy leaves store moisture, making this Hoya quite tolerant of short dry periods.

Reduce watering during the winter months when growth naturally slows.

Soil

Use a loose, chunky, well-draining potting mix.

A recommended blend includes:

  • Orchid bark

  • Perlite or pumice

  • Coco chips

  • High-quality potting mix

  • Horticultural charcoal (optional)

This airy mix provides the excellent drainage and root aeration that Hoyas naturally enjoy.

Humidity

Hoya carnosa ‘Krimson Queen’ thrives in 50–80% humidity.

It adapts well to average household humidity, but higher humidity encourages faster growth, larger leaves, and more abundant flowering.

Temperature

Maintain temperatures between 18–29°C (65–85°F).

Avoid exposing the plant to temperatures below 13°C (55°F) and protect it from cold drafts.

Fertilizer

Feed monthly during spring and summer using a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength.

Regular feeding supports vigorous vine growth, healthy foliage, and reliable blooming.

Growth Habit

‘Krimson Queen’ is a vigorous climbing or trailing vine. It looks beautiful spilling from a hanging basket, but it also thrives when trained onto a trellis, hoop, or moss pole. Climbing often encourages larger leaves and a fuller, more mature appearance.

Repotting

Repot every two to three years, or when the roots have filled the pot.

Hoyas generally prefer to be slightly root-bound, so choose a container only one size larger than the existing pot.

Flowering

With plenty of bright light and a little patience, Hoya carnosa ‘Krimson Queen’ produces spectacular clusters of waxy, star-shaped flowers. The blooms are soft pink with deep rosy centers and release a sweet fragrance, especially during the evening.

Never remove old flower spurs (peduncles), as Hoyas bloom repeatedly from the same spurs year after year.

Common Problems

Yellow leaves

  • Usually caused by overwatering or poorly drained soil.

Loss of variegation

  • Green shoots can occasionally appear. If a vine becomes entirely green and you wish to preserve the variegated appearance, it can be pruned back to encourage variegated growth.

Brown leaf edges

  • Often result from excessive direct sunlight or inconsistent watering.

Poor flowering

  • Usually caused by insufficient light, removing flower spurs, or frequent repotting.

Hoya carnosa ‘Krimson Queen’ has earned its reputation as one of the finest variegated Hoyas. Its elegant cream-edged leaves, blush-pink new growth, vigorous vines, and fragrant flower clusters make it a standout in any collection. Whether displayed in a hanging basket or climbing a trellis, this beautiful Hoya rewards growers with years of dependable growth and timeless beauty when given bright filtered light, an airy potting mix, and attentive but infrequent watering.
