Hoya Mathilde ‘Splash’
Hoya Mathilde ‘Splash’ Care Guide
A Charming Hybrid with Sparkling Silver Foliage
Hoya Mathilde ‘Splash’ is a delightful hybrid prized for its compact growth, round succulent leaves, and beautiful silver “splash” variegation that appears as if each leaf has been dusted with shimmering paint. Its easy-going nature, attractive foliage, and clusters of fragrant flowers have made it one of the most popular Hoyas among collectors.
Hoya Mathilde is a hybrid created by crossing Hoya carnosa and Hoya serpens. It combines the vigorous growth and reliability of Hoya carnosa with the small, rounded leaves and compact habit of Hoya serpens. The ‘Splash’ form simply refers to plants that display enhanced silver flecking across the leaves, making each one unique.
Like its parent species, Hoya Mathilde grows as an epiphyte in nature, clinging to tree branches where its roots receive excellent airflow, bright filtered light, and frequent tropical rains. Recreating these conditions indoors helps this hybrid thrive.
Light
Provide bright, indirect light throughout the day.
A few hours of gentle morning sun help maintain compact growth, encourage flowering, and bring out the beautiful silver splash on the leaves. Avoid harsh afternoon sun, which may scorch the foliage.
Watering
Allow the potting mix to dry about halfway between waterings.
Water thoroughly until excess water drains from the bottom of the pot. Never allow the plant to sit in standing water, as Hoyas are sensitive to soggy roots.
During the winter months, reduce watering as growth naturally slows.
Soil
Use a loose, chunky, fast-draining potting mix.
An excellent mix includes:
Orchid bark
Perlite or pumice
Coco chips
High-quality potting mix
Horticultural charcoal (optional)
This airy blend mimics the loose organic material surrounding the roots in its natural habitat.
Humidity
Hoya Mathilde ‘Splash’ grows well in 50–80% humidity.
Although it adapts well to average household humidity, higher humidity often encourages faster growth, healthier leaves, and more abundant blooms.
Temperature
Maintain temperatures between 18–29°C (65–85°F).
Avoid cold drafts and protect the plant from temperatures below 13°C (55°F).
Fertilizer
Feed once a month during spring and summer using a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength.
Consistent feeding supports healthy vines, vibrant foliage, and regular flowering.
Growth Habit
This hybrid naturally develops slender vines that can either trail beautifully from a hanging basket or climb a trellis. Many growers find that allowing the vines to climb encourages slightly larger leaves and a fuller appearance.
Its compact size makes it an excellent choice for windowsills, plant cabinets, or small spaces.
Repotting
Repot every two to three years, or when the roots have filled the pot.
Hoyas generally bloom best when slightly root-bound, so avoid oversized containers.
Flowering
Hoya Mathilde ‘Splash’ produces clusters of fuzzy, star-shaped white flowers with soft pink centers. The blooms are lightly fragrant and often appear multiple times throughout the growing season when the plant receives sufficient light.
Never remove old flower spurs (peduncles), as future blooms will continue to emerge from the same spurs.
Common Problems
Yellow leaves
Usually caused by overwatering or poor drainage.
Wrinkled leaves
Often indicate underwatering or root problems.
Long, sparse vines
Usually suggest the plant needs brighter light.
Loss of silver splash
The amount of splash is largely genetic, but bright indirect light helps the silver markings remain more noticeable.
Hoya Mathilde ‘Splash’ is a wonderful hybrid that combines the best qualities of two beloved Hoya species. Its compact size, sparkling silver-speckled foliage, easy care, and charming fragrant flowers make it an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced collectors. With bright filtered light, an airy potting mix, careful watering, and warm temperatures, this beautiful hybrid will reward you with lush growth and stunning blooms for many years.
